Physical rehabilitation is the process of restoring and regaining physical strength, range of motion and function. Typically, rehabilitation helps people gain greater independence after illness, injury or surgery. Rehabilitation, in this case, refers to physical medicine and rehabilitation. It does not refer to substance abuse or criminal rehabilitation.

Rest alone after an injury usually does not relieve the problems caused by inflammation and spasm; for example, a muscle in spasm cannot get adequate blood supply to heal. The body adapts and protects the injured area long after healing has started. These protective mechanisms alter movement of the whole musculoskeletal system and increase strain on other areas. Rehabilitation should start as soon as possible after an injury.

Injuries occur in automobile accidents and slip/falls, or at work and during physical activities. Many people wait to get care or avoid care completely.
